Stafford, the commander, was 38 years old at the time of the mission. On November 13, 1968, NASA announced the crew members of Apollo 10. Crew and key Mission Control personnel Position Lieutenant General Sam Phillips, the Apollo Program Manager, listened to the arguments on both sides and decided that having a dress rehearsal was crucial. Kraft and others opposed this, feeling that new procedures would have to be developed for a rendezvous in lunar orbit and that NASA had incomplete information regarding the Moon's mass concentrations, which might throw off the spacecraft's trajectory. However, Director of Flight Operations Christopher C. NASA official George Mueller favored a landing attempt on Apollo 10 he was known for his aggressive approach to moving the Apollo program forward. Although the lunar module intended for Apollo 10 was too heavy to perform the lunar mission, the one intended for Apollo 11 could be substituted by delaying Apollo 10 a month from its May 1969 planned launch. Some with the agency advocated this, feeling it senseless to bring astronauts so close to the lunar surface, only to turn away. NASA considered skipping the "F" mission as well and attempting the first lunar landing on Apollo 10. Apollo 10, the dress rehearsal for the lunar landing, was to be the "F" mission. Apollo 8, flown to the Moon's orbit without an LM, was considered a "C-prime" mission, but its success gave NASA the confidence to skip the "E" mission, which would have tested the full Apollo spacecraft in medium or high Earth orbit. The first crewed orbital test of the Lunar Module (LM) was accomplished on Apollo 9, the "D" mission. The early uncrewed flights were considered "A" or "B" missions, while Apollo 7, the crewed-flight test of the Command and Service Module (CSM), was the "C" mission. Framework Background įor a fuller overview of this subject, see Apollo program.īy 1967, NASA had devised a list of mission types, designated by letters, that needed to be flown before a landing attempt, which would be the "G" mission. Peanuts creator Charles Schulz also drew mission-related artwork for NASA. The mission's call signs were the names of the Peanuts characters Charlie Brown for the CSM and Snoopy for the LM, who became Apollo 10's semi-official mascots. Additionally, Apollo 10 set the record for the highest speed attained by a crewed vehicle: 39,897 km/h (11.08 km/s or 24,791 mph) on May 26, 1969, during the return from the Moon. Apollo 10 spent 61 hours and 37 minutes orbiting the Moon, for about eight hours of which Stafford and Cernan flew the LM apart from Young in the CSM, and about eight days total in space. Stafford and Cernan observed and photographed Apollo 11's planned landing site in the Sea of Tranquility. However, the mission accomplished its major objectives. The crew encountered some problems during the flight: pogo oscillations during the launch phase and a brief, uncontrolled tumble of the LM ascent stage in lunar orbit during its solo flight. While NASA had considered attempting the first crewed lunar landing on Apollo 10, mission planners ultimately decided that it would be prudent to have a practice flight to hone the procedures and techniques. Then they rejoined Young in the CSM and, after the CSM completed its 31st orbit of the Moon, they returned safely to Earth. It was designated an "F" mission, intended to test all spacecraft components and procedures short of actual descent and landing.Īfter the spacecraft reached lunar orbit, astronaut John Young remained in the Command and Service Module (CSM) while astronauts Thomas Stafford and Gene Cernan flew the Apollo Lunar Module (LM) to within 14.4 kilometers (7.8 nmi) of the lunar surface, the point at which powered descent for landing would begin on a landing mission. NASA, the mission's operator, described it as a "dress rehearsal" for the first Moon landing ( Apollo 11, two months later ). Let’s face it my granddaughter’s growing up in a wholly digital world. If it’s not a sunny or hot enough garden spot, rather than getting leggy, your tomato plant will probably grow quite nicely but you may not get many ripe tomatoes. For planting the tomato in a garden outdoors, you’ll also want to make sure it’s a sunny site. When there’s not enough light, you’ll notice the plant stretching to try to access light (this is known as getting “leggy”). If you’re keeping your tomato plant indoors or on a patio, you want to make sure there’s a lot of light that will reach the plant. Of course, there’s not much you can do when it’s raining outside unless your tomato plant is in a greenhouse or plastic hoophouse. If you do water over the whole plant, it’s best to do it when the plant’s leaves will be able to quickly dry out again, like in the morning of a sunny or breezy day. Because tomato plants are susceptible to many fungal diseases on the leaves, it’s often recommended to water at the base of the tomato plant rather than sprinkling water over top of the whole plant. Many people wait until the tomato plant just slightly starts to wilt before giving the soil a good dose of water. Especially while still in their pot, make sure to not overwater your tomato. Tomatoes need enough water to live but they don’t like it when the soil is too wet for too long. You can use stakes, metal hoops, a homemade teepee, tomato cages, etc for this purpose and then lay the cover over top of that. If you use a bed sheet to protect the seedlings from frost, make sure to take it off in the morning – plants need light! Make sure that your tomato plant has some structure around it so the row cover or bed sheet isn’t lying right on top of the plant. The benefit of row covers is that light can transmit through them so you can also leave them on during the day. Once you’ve planted your tomato seedling in the ground, the best way to protect your tomato plant from chance of frost is with protective blankets like row covers (you can purchase these at a garden centre) or old bed sheets. While your tomato seedling is still in its pot, you can move it indoors at night and back outside on warm days. It’s important to listen to weather forecasts for chance of frost. The last frost-free date is never the same but typically sits somewhere between May 24 th and June 5 th in our region. Once you’ve brought your tomato seedling(s) home, it needs: We start them from seed in March and grow them in organic potting soil with organic nutrients that we add for slow-release minerals so your tomato harvest will be tasty and nutritious. Of course, if you don’t have any particular colour scheme to work with, you’ll have free reign on your cards. Research has shown that engaging more than one sense at a time can improve recall of an object, so people would be more likely to remember your business.Ħ) It’s wise to keep your cards in line with the rest of your company’s branding. Embossing creates a raised, 3D effect, which adds elegance and style to a card.Įmbossing also makes the card more tactile. A plain black and white design can be as memorable and striking as a colourful card – and can often be seen as more ‘stylish’ too.ĥ) If you’re concerned about a black and white card looking dull, try embossing the words. However, don’t underestimate the power of simplicity. This tactic is often used by design and creative businesses, with the aim of appearing fresh, exciting and original. There are plenty of free QR code generators on the web, so getting technological doesn’t have to break the bank.Ĥ) Bright colours - when used correctly - can make a card stand out, and look distinctive. It’s also an easy way to create a link between your printed and online content – by scanning the code, people can automatically be sent to your website. They provide a neat way of including a lot of information on a card, without making it look cluttered. Also, don’t forget about the font itself: keep it professional and simple – don’t be tempted to use Comic Sans, or a detailed calligraphic font which is impossible to decipher.ģ) Another way of saving space is to create a QR Code for your card. As a general rule of thumb, don’t go smaller than 8pt. Beware – small text can often look readable onscreen, but turn into an illegible smudge when printed. Many businesses no longer include an address on their cards, so if you’re struggling for space, you may want to remove this from your design.Ģ) If you’ve got a lot of information to display, you may be tempted to shrink the size of your text. From our experience, your website, email address and phone number are essential. Think carefully about which contact details to include – you need to strike a balance between providing enough points of contact, without making your card look cluttered. Make sure your name, job title and company name or logo are clearly displayed. Follow the tips below to create distinctive, professional cards that packs a punch!ġ) It may sound obvious, but the first (and most important!) thing to consider when designing your card is the information you want to convey. One of the best ways to do this, is with a well-designed, simple to understand card. Your card is often a potential customer’s first contact with your company you want to engage with them as well as encourage them to find out more about you and what you do. If you consider yourself a pro, reach for a cream contour palette. Top tip: If you opt for a palette, rather than sticks, paint each shade on to the skin using a flat brush - the bristles are densely packed together and therefore hold more product than anything fluffier. ‘A cream contour is better if you want a dewy, more natural finish to the skin and a powder contour is better if you want a more defined, matte finish,’ adds Findlay. What’s more, a cream contour stick will generally be easier to apply and blend, so is a good idea for any nervous newcomers.Ī powder, on the other hand, offers higher impact and longevity: ideal for big nights out. 'A cream contour is better for someone with a normal to dry complexion and a powder contour is better for someone with a normal to oily complexion,' says Findlay. So, which ones are best for contouring? Really, it depends on your skin type, and how sharp you want your cheekbones to be. Turns out, the soft-focus filter of your camera lens can make a contoured face look a lot more flattering than the harsh reality of your neon office lighting. While the Kardashians and their glam teams – think the talented Mario Dedivanovic and Joyce Bonelli – make contouring look strikingly effective on Instagram, it's true the technique doesn't always translate well into real life. There's something about the word 'contouring' that instils fear in even the most make-up savvy among us – and if the concept of cheekbone-chiselling breaks you out in a sweat, frankly, it's understandable. Most solar garden lights need between 1 to 4 batteries to work. Once the unit is open you’ll have access to the batteries. On most models you’ll find the screws on the top or bottom of the light.
